USCB appoints Dr. Harvey Varnet Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
The University of South Carolina Beaufort is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Harvey Varnet as Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Varnet’s broad background encompasses work at the university, college and community college level, covering four states. He was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Varnet was a member of the project team that developed and built the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.
In accepting the position, Dr. Varnet shared his perspective: “USCB has a unique leadership role in our region. The academic programs that we have developed are building on regional strengths and meeting regional needs in new and exciting ways. I look forward to working with the faculty at USCB to create even more opportunities for student accomplishment and success.”
Prior joining USCB as Director of Libraries in 2008, Dr. Varnet was at the American University of Kuwait as Director of the Library. A librarian for almost 40 years, he has been involved at every level of University administration. At each institution where he has served, Varnet involved himself in matters of the whole institution as well as library work. He taught courses, earned faculty tenure, participated in faculty governance and curriculum development, managed administrative units, and served as a university contract administrator, grievance officer and collective bargainer.
Dr. Varnet served as the interim EVCAA beginning in October 2009. As Chancellor Jane Upshaw commented, “Harvey Varnet has done an exceptional job as Interim Executive Vice Chancellor; Academic Affairs has moved forward under his leadership. USCB looks forward to continuing this progress. Dr. Varnet’s experience in all aspects of our core mission of teaching, research and service will be of significant value to the University.”
Dr. Varnet received his Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth. He earned two masters degrees: a Master of Science in Library Science from Simmons College and a Master of Education in Instructional Media from Bridgewater (MA) State College. He completed his Doctor of Arts in Library Administration at Simmons College.
