What We Do Out of Class

Lots of opportunities!

THE SHOW

You can attend and participate in THE SHOW, a fortnightly event series. Sometimes these are social and silly (ice cream parties and game nights). Sometimes these are workshops (about writing and careers). Sometimes we have guest speakers (writers, journalists, etc.). Sometimes students and faculty present fresh work. Here we foster a spirit of hospitality, and connect students beginning the program to those with more experience in it.

The department also sponsors three student organizations:

The Society of Creative Writers is dedicated to sharing a passion for the written word with like-minded peers. This student-led group allows writers of any experience level to share their work, get constructive criticism and other feedback from classmates, network or just hang out and talk about writing.  The group holds a public reading at the end of the semester. Each semester, society members and other contributors from diverse majors across USCB assemble their work in the university's literary magazine, The Pen, which reaches out to fellow students and the community to showcase a taste of the university's broad range of creative talent

Sigma Tau Delta is USCB’s own chapter of the International English Honor Society. The Society’s mission is to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature studies, provide cultural and social stimulation on college campuses, promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities, support exemplary character and good fellowship among its members, and serve society by fostering literacy.

Rogues and Vagabonds (named for the Elizabethan act that banned unattached theatrical performers) is for students interested in any aspect of theater: acting, directing, and design. The Sturdy Beggars (also mentioned in the act) are an insurgent improv troupe.

Publications

You can also be involved in editing and publishing two publications, both published biannually The Pen, USCB's creative writing journal, and The May River Review, USCB's interdisciplinary critical journal. A lot of this work takes place in different sections of ENGL 211: Editing and Publishing Practicum, a one-credit course that can be taken multiple times for credit.

Academic Advising

As a USCB English student, you'll be advised by a USCB English faculty member, who'll help you plan your courses and help you translate what we do here to the world beyond. You'll meet with your academic advisor in the run up to signing up for classes the next semester, but this person is there to help with questions as they occur. All USCB English students are encouraged to reflect on their academic journey in writing, through writing of personal statements, reflections, or personal strategic plans, and this also serves as a basis for students and faculty to talk.
