USCB Endowed Scholarships
Brinkley Family Endowment
The Brinkley Family provided a scholarship to be awarded to first generation college students residing in the four county area of Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper, and Hampton with at least a 3.0 GPA entering as a freshman. Preference is shown to students who have participated in the Boys & Girls Clubs of the four-county area or the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Achievement School of Hilton Head.
Colden R. Battey, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
The Colden R. Battey Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund was provided by longtime USCB supporter, Mr. Colden R. Battey Jr. This scholarship is awarded to students based on academic merit.
David McCollum Memorial Scholarship
In memory of her husband, who was a long-time Professor of Biology at USCB, Eleanor McCollum Levin established this scholarship to benefit an undergraduate earning a degree in Biology, Marine Science, Ecology or Coastal Conservation based on academic merit. Professor David McCollum developed the Pritchards Island Loggerhead Sea Turtle Conservation Project in 1982 to assist in the conservation and preservation of the loggerhead sea turtle by protecting the nests and increasing the hatchling survival rate on land.
Dr. Louise Anders Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Anders, deceased, was a dedicated servant to Beaufort County and its education system. Her legacy in public education remains in Beaufort County through the scholarship in her name, awarded to a deserving student based on personal integrity, moral character, and a keen desire to succeed. Students who are regularly enrolled and academically worthy are eligible for this scholarship.
Edith R. Harvey Scholarship
Mrs. Harvey provided this scholarship to a student interested in religious studies and/or other liberal arts majors with intentions of proceeding on to seminary. The student must demonstrate academic merit and financial need and predict a 3.0 grade point average.
Emory W. Rushton & Susan Y. Rushton Endowed Scholarship
Emory and Susan Rushton are alumni of USCB and graduates of the University of South Carolina. Preference in awarding the scholarship will be given to students with significant finical need and academic merit with the intent to earn a degree in Studio Arts.
G. Thomas Upshaw Endowed Scholarship
The G. Thomas Upshaw Endowed Scholarship Fund was created to honor the 33 years of dedication Tom Upshaw contributed to Palmetto Electric Cooperative, 30 of which he served as CEO. Preference will be given to veterans of the United States Military who served on active duty and enrolled as a full-time student at USCB, residing in Beaufort, Jasper, or Hampton Counties in South Carolina.
Heard Family Endowed Scholarship in memory of Morgan C. Haynes
Col (ret) Paula and Col(ret) William Sherman, along with Mr. Walter L. Haynes and Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Heard Jr. established this scholarship, in honor of their daughter and granddaughter Morgan, with preference to students seeking a degree in the visual arts or health professions. Col(s) Paula and William Sherman are Morgan's mother and stepfather. Mr. Walter Haynes is Morgan's father. Mr. and Mrs. Heard are her grandparents. The Shermans were stationed in England, when then 20-year-old Morgan enrolled in USC Beaufort. Before she could begin in the Spring of 2000, she was a pedestrian killed in an automobile accident. In addition to her family's contributions, friends, relatives and members on staff at the operating room at Good Samaritan Hospital, in Puyallup, Washington, and Beaufort's hospital community made generous memorial contributions.
J. Eugene Norris Scholarship
The J. Eugene Norris Scholarship was created to further the diversity mission and enhance the multi-cultural diversity of the student population at USCB. The scholarship will be awarded to a qualified undergraduate student from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds who demonstrate the greatest financial need.
Jane T. Upshaw Mathematics & Mathematics Education Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Jane T. Upshaw has led USCB from a two-year campus to a four-year university, opened the new Hilton Head Gateway campus in Bluffton, and founded Sand Shark athletics. Preference for the scholarship will be given to an incoming freshman with academic merit and an intention to earn a degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.
Julia Branch Burgess Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Julia Branch Burgess Memorial Endowed Scholarship shows preference to an incoming freshman with a record of academic excellence and the intention to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education.
Leith Paul Trask Memorial Scholarship
Marjorie Trask and her family established this scholarship to honor her husband who was an excellent painter in addition to being a prominent businessman. This scholarship is awarded to an art major or a student with a demonstrated interest in the visual arts.
Linda Lisi Pre-Veterinarian Endowed Scholarship
The Linda Lisi Pre-Veterinarian Endowed Scholarship will be presented to a student with proven academic merit who is pursuing a degree in the Biological Sciences, Pre-Veterinarian advising track.
Dr. Lynn Mulkey Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Lynn Mulkey helped to develop the Human Services and Sociology degree programs at USCB. Preference in awarding the scholarship will be given to students pursuing a degree in Human Services. If no qualified Human Services students are available, second preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in Sociology.
Mary Moody Memorial Scholarship
The Mary Mood Memorial Scholarship is given to a student based on the criteria of academic merit.
Maureen and Edward Seim Scholarship
Given by Dr. and Mrs. Edward Seim, this scholarship is designated to a full time student of proven academic ability and financial need.
Ramon N. Tessler Memorial Scholarship
In memory of her husband, Mrs. Ricki Tessler, endowed this scholarship to be given to a Beaufort or Hampton county resident. Those who reside in Sheldon, South Carolina will be given first consideration. Students who have participated in the Sheldon Community Enrichment Program (SCEP) will be given top priority. If such student is not available, the scholarship may be awarded to a Beaufort or Hampton County resident.
Randolph (Buster) Murdaugh Scholarship (Beaufort)
The Randolph (Buster) Murdaugh Scholarship Fund alternates between the University of South Carolina Beaufort and the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie each year. It is awarded to students who are residents of the South Carolina Fourteenth Judicial District. The student is to be of financial need, defined for the purpose of this scholarship as having a combined family income at least one dollar below the average income of the five-county average of Allendale, Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper and Hampton counties.
Roger L. Steele Endowed Art Scholarship
Roger Steele was an avid printmaker, teaching Studio Arts courses at USCB for 37 years. Preference will be given to students who are majoring in Studio Arts at USCB and focusing their upper level studies in printmaking. Secondary preference will be given to students earning a major in any Fine Arts program at USCB.
Sea Island Rotary in memory of Darwin Bashaw Scholarship
Honoring Darwin B. Bashaw, former Dean of USC Beaufort and member of the Sea Island Rotary Club, this scholarship is based on academic merit, excellence, and potential. The Sea Island Rotary Club raised the funds to establish this endowment.
Sol Neidich Family Scholarship
Dr. and Mrs. Sol Neidich, longtime friends of the University, contributed the first scholarship to USC Beaufort. Following their death in an automobile accident, their daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Kenneth Hoffman oversaw the creation of the scholarship and have continued the award based on academic merit and financial need. Recipients must be a graduate of a local high school, accepted to USCB as a full-time, degree-seeking student, show academic ability, and have demonstrated leadership qualities in school and community affairs.
William F. Cochrane Scholarship
Established by the Cochrane family in memory of Mr. Cochrane, who devoted much of his time in support of USCB. This scholarship benefits deserving students in the community who demonstrate academic merit and financial need.
William Mason Hardimon Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. Shawn A. Hardimon in memory of his father, this scholarship is
awarded to a business student (not to exceed 120 credit hours) who holds a minimum
3.0 grade point average, and demonstrates financial need.
USCB Endowed Scholarships - Funding in Process
Charlie Mitchell Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Charlie Mitchell Memorial Endowed Scholarship was created in memory of Charlie Mitchell, an avid supporter of USCB and Sand Shark Athletics. The scholarship will be given to a USCB student who maintains a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrates financial need.
Frances and Joseph Lisi Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Frances and Joseph Lisi Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore student pursing a degree in Nursing. The student must display proven academic ability, be a resident of Beaufort or Jasper counties, and have financial need.
The Senator Clementa Pinckney Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Senator Clementa Pinckney Endowed Scholarship Fund was created to recognize his achievements and his life lived in service to his home state of South Carolina and to celebrate his love for and dedication to the Lowcountry region of the state. The scholarship will be given to a USCB student with preference given to students from Jasper County.
