Wednesday, August 17th 2016 in the Recreation Center (time TBD)

This will be the FYRE kickoff event. Dr. Ellen Malphrus, USCB Professor of English, author of the novel Untying the Moon, and friend of Pat Conroy will be giving our convocation address and speaking to students about the book.

Movie Screening of Conrack

Tuesday, August 23rd 2016 in Campus Center 105 at 8:00pm

Conrack is a docudrama based on the book The Water is Wide. It was filmed in 1974 and Jon Voight plays Pat Conroy. Students will be able to enjoy a popcorn bar during the film.

FYREside Chats

Wednesday, September 21th 2016 in Campus Center 105 at 6:30pm

FYREside Chats allow students the opportunity to discuss the book with peers in small groups led by faculty and staff. Some groups may feature upperclassmen as co-facilitators. There will be s’mores by the fire pit!

Savannah Riverkeeper Service Learning Project

Thursday, October 13th 2016 (time TBD)

This alternative fall break event will give students the opportunity to learn about pollution in the Savannah River while doing their part to make the river cleaner.

USCB FYRE Essay Contest

Submission Deadline Friday, January 20th 2017

Using a prompt, students will write essays reflecting on the book and what they have learned. Some courses will be using this prompt as an assignment and encourage students who write the best essays to submit their work. The contest winner will be featured at Student Research and Scholarship Day.
