James Shinn, Jr., PhD
Assistant Professor of History
I teach a wide range of courses in U.S. history, with a particular focus on the 19th century. My research interests include the history of the Civil War and Reconstruction, the history of U.S. relations with Cuba, the history of the U.S. South, and the history of democracy. I am currently writing a book that explores that entangled histories of Reconstruction in the United States and the Ten Years’ War in Cuba. Before joining the USCB faculty in 2022, I taught at Yale University and Wesleyan University in Connecticut. I received my PhD from Yale in 2020.
