USCB Broadcast Students Gain Real-World Experience Producing ‘By the River’

& Dr. Caroline Sawyer, assistant professor of Communication StudiesCaroline Sawyer, Ph.D., assistant professor of Communication Studies, and her students have taken our concept of experiential learning to a whole new level. Students in Dr. Sawyer’s broadcast program are fully involved in a partnership with SCETV’s Beaufort studio. So involved, in fact, that they man cameras, the teleprompter and the master control for SCETV’s “By the River” program. While one student was booking talent for the program, a whole team of students was busy building an entire backdrop from scratch. The arrangement has paid dividends to both partners: The students gain real-life experience in a professional television studio and SCETV presents a professional-quality program at a modest cost.
