Wife, mother, business owner and 2016 graduate of the Saturday Business Degree Program at the University of South Carolina Beaufort—Angela Huser can do it all!
The former paralegal attended college right after high school to obtain an Associate of Arts degree in Paralegal Studies. She worked in the legal profession for eight years before deciding to return to school to earn a bachelor’s degree at USCB.
“I was unfulfilled in my job; I was a paralegal and had been one since I graduated high school,” she says. “In my position, I was kind of ‘topped out.’ There weren’t any advancement opportunities for me.”
In addition to being unfulfilled at work, Huser felt a nagging desire to earn a bachelor’s degree. “So, with those two things, being unfulfilled and wanting to obtain a bachelor’s degree, I decided to go back to school.”
Huser researched various degree programs, including those offered at local universities, as well as online options. “I noticed that USCB was close to where I lived and I found out they had a Saturday program. I could still work, which was necessary,” she says. “I’ve had a full-time job since I was 16, so I knew I would continue to work. So really, the USCB Saturday Business Program was just a great fit for me.”
In September 2016, Huser took on the role of business owner. Palmetto Kettle Corn was founded by a friend of hers in 2012. “He grew the business substantially over five years, but he had reached a point where he was ready to focus on his next endeavor.” After careful consideration, Angela and her husband decided to take over the business.
“I’ve always wanted to run my own business and be my own boss. If it wasn’t for the USCB Saturday Business Program, it’s difficult to say whether that dream would have ever become a reality.”
Palmetto Kettle Corn exhibits at several farmer’s markets, special events, and festivals, including Mayfest, the Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival, and Habersham Harvest Festival. Its products are also available for purchase at several Lowcountry grocery stores, hotels and retailers between Charleston and Savannah.
A first-generation college graduate, Huser is the only woman in her family to have obtained a bachelor’s degree.
