USCB's Sierra Brown Awarded Outstanding First-Year Student of the Year Award
Sierra Brown, a USCB nursing student in the Beaufort College Honors program, was awarded
the Outstanding First-Year Student of the Year award at the University’s Prom Do-Over
Celebration on April 13.
Brown received this honor due to her commitment to USCB’s values and her involvement on campus and in the community.
Brown is active in many student organizations. She assisted with the creation of a Constitution and by-laws to form the Honors Student Association, where she is this new group’s first treasurer. For the Student Nursing Association, she is serving as the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Legislative Director. She served as a speaker at USCB Beaufort Campus Student Day.
Brown is a top student who presented “Dissection of the Fetal Pig” at Student Research and Scholarship Day in April. She also helps other students.
“I have noted her guidance of other students struggling on certain academic issues during Honors Hours. Most often, this type of peer-to-peer academic guidance has much higher value than a faculty telling students how to do the academic work,” said Dr. Babet Alvarez, one of several faculty and staff members who nominated Brown for the Outstanding First-Year Student of the Year award.
Brown works in the Beaufort Campus mailroom for 14-16 hours per week and assists Director of Student Experience, Stacey Holmes, in planning events on the Beaufort campus, volunteers with the American Red Cross, and previously volunteered with the Smithsonian transcribing documents for the Harvard-Center for Astrophysics. She also advocates for equal rights as she wrote a letter to the state house about hate crimes.
Several faculty and staff members nominated Brown for the Outstanding First-Year Student of the Year award. Brown is an example to other students, showing them you don’t have to be here long to start out strong and as Dr. Babet Alvarez said “She is a student who has undaunting pluck”.
