The best way to fuel ambition is to spend time with successful people. USCB's Beaufort College Honors students last month traveled to Atlanta to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and Laney Graduate School at Emory University. On this trip, they met with three scientists, toured the CDC’s David J. Sencer museum and received a personalized campus tour.

At the CDC, the students received presentations by Dr. Jessica Belser, Microbiologist and Epidemiologist; Dr. Adesubomi Adeyemo, Public Health Analyst; and Dr. Shanna Miko, Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. The specialists shared their professional backgrounds and described a passion for life-long learning that propelled them to where they are today.

At Emory, two African-American students who are completing PhDs shared their academic journeys with the USCB students. They described the support networks that have guided and encouraged them through intellectual inquiry.

The drive, energy and enthusiasm of the specialists and the doctoral candidates were palpable and created a lasting impression on the USCB students.

Rose Van Etten, a sophomore, said she enjoyed learning more about graduate school and visiting the CDC Museum’s exhibits about public health topics – including diseases.

“Taking the trip to Emory and the CDC really opened my eyes to the opportunities available to myself and my peers. I’m interested in one of Emory’s undergraduate summer research programs and am currently striving to achieve this opportunity. This trip was one of the benefits of being an honors student at USCB,” said Emmajyn Blair, a sophomore who is majoring in nursing.
