USCB's New Makerspace Now Open
USCB students and faculty have a new place to get creative. The University’s makerspace
hosted a ribbon-cutting on Oct. 24 to launch this unique space dedicated to imagination
and creation. Chancellor Al M. Panu, Provost Eric Skipper, USCB Education Foundation
board members and others who attended got a close-up look at the possibilities it
has to offer.
Students are excited to explore the maker mindset of creating and following their own interests — this is the core of a makerspace. The University believes this new resource will help them develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. Through hands on-learning, makerspaces boost technical abilities, increase self-confidence and foster entrepreneurship.
A collaborative work space on the second floor of the Bluffton campus library, the makerspace lets students and faculty use high-tech to low-tech tools to create and invent. Through the generosity of the members of the USCB Education Foundation and USCB’s Office of Academic Affairs, it has been outfitted with 3D printers, a 3D scanner, Adobe Creative Cloud software, CAD software, VR headsets, podcasting equipment and more.
Makerspace manager Nithish Dirisipamu, a computer science major, gave attendees blue plastic USCB logos that students made on the 3D printers. He and other students also demonstrated the VR headsets and showed off the podcast equipment. Dr. Kimberly Dudas, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Innovation (Interim), supervises the makerspace and its staff and was instrumental in getting the space up and running.
The entire USCB community is invited to check out the makerspace and explore their ideas.
