Minor in Sport Management at USCB
Overview
The Sport Management Minor is available online for students majoring in Public Health, Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management, Psychology, Sociology and Human Services.
Why should I complete a Sport Management Minor?
The proposed minor capitalizes on the geographic region’s strength as a leisure travel destination and the corresponding need for a high-quality professional education for related careers in sport management. The University’s mission includes responding to regional needs, and the minor in sport management will prepare graduates to contribute to the thriving local tourism industry while enjoying satisfying professional careers in their area of interest. The need for well-educated hospitality and sport management professionals in the area is currently steadily growing, with a booming post-pandemic rebound of tourism to the South Carolina Lowcountry and lack of suitable candidates to fill much-needed managerial positions. The local hospitality industry employs more workers than any other industry, and some organizations have been forced to close or limit operational hours because of the staffing shortage.
The proposed minor also supports USCB values, including engagement and partnerships. The Minor in Sport Management will make use of the Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management department’s and USCB’s Center for Event Management and Hospitality Training’s deep ties with local industry. The Minor in Sport Management will also offer students in other disciplines to benefit from a deep dive into this subject area. Students will interact with sport organizers and sport professionals in enriching experiential learning opportunities and hear from knowledgeable, experienced leaders about current market conditions and challenges. A common component of all courses within the minor will be integration of course concepts with fieldwork. The South Carolina Lowcountry offers a number of premier sporting events where students can work, shadow or be mentored in events ranging from little league baseball to the Heritage Golf Classic. The South Carolina coast as well as the coast of Georgia both offer a myriad of learning opportunities in an experiential setting.
Between Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, there are upwards of twenty (20) teams that could offer internship, mentoring and shadowing opportunities. These include:

The addition of a minor in sport management is the logical and meaningful response to a growing demand from students, athletic recruiters, admissions counselors, and the community.
Requirements
A minor at USCB requires a minimum of 18 hours credit.
