Frequently Asked Questions
Tutors are trained and ready to help students with issues such as paper content, organization, style, research, citation, and grammar and mechanics. When you bring your essay into the Writing Center, you will meet one-on-one with a tutor on the issues where you need the most help.
We do not provide written comments on student papers; our tutors are not editors or proofreaders. The goal of the Writing Center is to help you learn how to improve your writing, so you can expect to have conversations with the tutors about your papers. Both the student writer and the tutor are active participants in the tutoring process, and students are expected to come to tutoring ready to think and write.
Tutors reserve the right to send you away if you do not come prepared; it is very difficult to help students with their assignments if we don’t know what those assignments are. Please bring, at the minimum, a copy of your assignment, any readings or sources you plan to use in your paper, and your latest rough draft. You need to get started on your paper before you come visit us; we do not help students write papers from scratch. It may also be helpful to bring any notes from class or other materials you think might help us better help you.
Tutoring is available during drop-in hours (TBA) and also by appointment. Students are strongly encouraged to make appointments for important essays. You may schedule an appointment on our scheduling page or on Facebook. If you need to cancel your appointment, please call us ahead of time at (843) 208-8024. Don’t stand us up! Students who miss appointments may lose scheduling privileges.
We generally do not assist students with paper “emergencies.” For the best assistance with your paper, please visit the Writing Center no later than 48 hours before your paper is due. You are welcome to bring your essay later, but we may not be able to help you.
