Theater Simulations at USCB Teach What Caring Looks Like in Action

Theater SimulationsThe University of South Carolina Beaufort offers unique coursework utilizing theater techniques, in partnership with the university's Nursing program. By having actors simulate different medical conditions, healthcare professionals can learn how to recognize and respond to a variety of patient needs.

USCB's theater simulation courses teach young actors to be effectively portray patients so they can:

  •  Provide a realistic training environment for future healthcare professionals, allowing them to practice their communication and bedside manner skills in a safe and controlled setting.
  • Help nursing students develop empathy and understanding for their patients' experiences, which can improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.
  • Assist their peers to develop the confidence and poise needed to handle difficult or emotional situations in a professional manner.

Through role-playing exercises and group discussions, theater and nursing students learn to communicate effectively with patients and their families, develop empathy, and understand the emotional challenges that come with healthcare work.

Theater simulation coursework also covers topics such as cultural sensitivity and ethical considerations in healthcare. Student actors feel pride as they are helping to train future healthcare professionals to provide quality care.

“My favorite class was "Performance of Caring." I acted as a simulated patient in the nursing program’s sim lab. I loved helping the nursing students implement all the new material they learned. For my career, I want to be a hospital administrator.”
