Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is a federally funded grant that serves as the foundation upon which all other undergraduate aid is awarded. Unlike a loan, it does not have to be repaid. Federal Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree. Eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant is based on need as determined by federal law and calculated from the financial information that students and their parents provide on the FAFSA.

With year-round Pell, students may now receive additional Pell grant funding for the summer semester as long as they continue to meet the regular eligibility requirements and enroll at least half-time (6 credit hours). Receiving the additional Pell does not reduce the amount students can receive for the next academic year.

Pell Grant Duration of Eligibility

A student's eligibility to receive a Pell Grant has been reduced from 18 full-time semesters or its equivalent to 12 full-time semesters or its equivalent. This provision applies to all Pell Grant eligible students and includes all years of receipt of Pell Grant funding. Thus, the calculation of this total will include previous semesters/quarters at USCB or at any other school, including community colleges, where a Pell Grant was paid.

Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility

The FAFSA Processing System (FPS) uses data provided by the applicant and contributors on the FAFSA form to determine Max, Min or Calculated Pell Grant eligibility and calculate the SAI.

Maximum and Minimum Pell Grant

The maximum  Pell Grant is $7,395 during the 2024-2025 academic year. The minimum Pell is $740.

Calculated Pell Grant

A calculated Pell Grant is calculated based on a student's Student Aid Index (SAI) and cost of attendance (COA).

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants are federally funded grants awarded to some undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Recipients must be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant and not have earned a bachelor's degree. SEOG does not have to be repaid.

Application requires submission of the FAFSA. FAFSA results received by the USCB Office of Financial Aid/VA by March 1st will receive priority consideration. Follow-up documents, if required, should be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid/VA promptly to ensure consideration for these funds. Funding is limited and awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Federal Work-Study Program (FWS)

The Federal Work-Study Program gives students an opportunity for part-time positions on campus and off campus with community service agencies. Work-study funds are limited, and the awarding of work-study depends on the availability of funds. To be eligible for employment under this federal program, you must file the FAFSA and indicate that you are interested in work-study.
